Reasons for Air Source Heat Pumps Not Cooling

Mar 10, 2022

If your heat pump isn't cooling, this could be one of several issues, Inno Thermal believes most of them are similar to the ones listed above.

Thermostat issues: The first thing to check is that your thermostat is set to cool. If it is, there may be an issue with the thermostat causing it to read the wrong temperature, or an electrical issue preventing the thermostat from communicating with the heat pump. In either case, you will need to hire a professional.

Broken reversing valve: If your heat pump is running but the air coming out of the vent is hot, this could be a problem with the reversing valve. Again, this is part of a heat pump that turns the refrigerant around so that it can act as both a heater and an air conditioner. If this part fails, a technician will need to replace it.

Dirty components: If the air coming out of the exhaust is warm, this is a good sign that your components are dirty. Go outside, clean the heat pump so it's free of any debris, and check the air filter to see if it needs replacing.

Low refrigerant bills: Again, if your refrigerant levels are too low or if there is a leak, your heat pump will work hard to cool your home. Have a technician check your levels and fix any leaks.
